The Sandvik Coromant RA216 GC4240 right-hand carbide indexable ball nose milling insert has a curved shape and highest edge security (M), and provides good shock resistance without limiting wear resistance for medium roughing of steel in difficult-to-average machining conditions in toughness-demanding operations. A combination of carbide and a thin multilayer coating of titanium carbon nitride (TiCN), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and titanium nitride (TiN) applied through medium temperature chemical vapor deposition (MTCVD) performs well in toughness-demanding operations, and may be used with or without coolant. MTCVD coatings are deposited at lower temperatures than CVD coatings, resulting in the appearance of few or no cracks in the coating and providing improved toughness and smoothness compared to CVD coatings. This positive insert is used with the CoroMill 216 ball nose milling insert holder, a screw-style holding system for contoured profiling of 3D shapes. The insert has an M edge performance type for highest security. The curved shape with corner radius provides a very strong cutting edge that produces thin chips to support high feed rates. The insert has a hole in the center, two cutting edges, and a 9-degree side clearance angle. Milling inserts are coded according to their specific cutting and application capability (e.g., RA216-10 02 M-M). Each section of the code represents details of the insert: right or left hand, U.S. version, compatible toolholder series, size, corner radius, and edge performance. Insert shapes and sizes may have different cutting depths, speeds, lead angles, and feed rates. Generally, as the insert size becomes larger, the maximum cutting depth increases. Cutting depth influences the metal removal rate, the number of cuts, chip evacuation, and power required when using the insert.
